뉴욕 뿐만 아니라 거의 전 세계를 다니며 매마른 가슴속에 음악을 흩뿌리고 다닙니다.
그 가족들은 모두가 피나는 노력과 가족의 화합을 통해 정상에 우뚝 선 가족입니다.
부모님의 사랑이 두 아들을 멋있는 음악가로 만들었고 가슴 속에 부모가 무엇인지 부모는 그들에게 무엇을 심어 주었는지를 분명히 알고 자라 주었습니다.
어려움에 처했을 때, 평소 부모가 해 준 말과 정신세계가 그들의 어려움을 극복할 수 있는 힘이 됩니다.
그래서 그들은 올곧이 자랐고 부모가 하는 모습을 보고 자신들이 무엇을 해야만 하는지를 진작부터 알아차렸던 것입니다.
행복은 거저 주어지는 것이 아니라 창조하는 것이며, 행복을 누릴 자격이 있는 자만이 그것을 가질 수 있는 것입니다.
예술의 길은 항상 행복하기만 한 것은 아닙니다. 때로는 고난과 좌절, 그리고 참을 수 없는 고독이 밀물처럼 세차게 밀려 들기도 합니다.

한국이 낳은 세계적인 피아니스트 폴 김 (한국명: 김성일) 은 유창한 각 나라 언어로 공연마다 곡해설로 대화가 있는 음악회로 청중과 거리감을 좁힌 피아니스트이다. 그는 불란서의 위대한 작곡가 올리비에 메시앙 (Olivier Messiaen) 음악의 국제적인 권위자이기도하다. 여러 평론가들은 그를 가리켜 "탁월한 음악성과 뛰어난 곡 해석으로 청중을 사로잡는 카리스마를 가진 연주자", “그의 지적인 성실함과 뛰어난 기교, 놀라운 힘의 표현…" 이라는 말로 그를 평가한다. 메시앙은 생전 자신의 음악 전문가로 명성을 얻고 있는 폴 김에 대해 "나의 음악을 살아있는 리듬과 화려한 음색을 가장 잘 표현하는 훌륭한 피아니스트" 라고 격찬한 일은 대 노장에게 흔치 않은 일이었다. 또한 메시앙의 미망인이자 프랑스의 전설적인 피아니스트 이본 로리오는 "최상의 연주, 지적인 예술성, 섬세한 음색과 무한계의 테크닉을 갖춘 위대한 피아니스트..." 라고 평하였다.
폴 김은 한 작곡가의 작품을 포괄적으로 연주해온 피아니스트로서 메시앙 뿐만 아니라 베토벤, 리스트, 라벨, 스트라빈스키, 찰스 아이브스 및 20세기 음악을 집중연구, 연주해왔다. 링컨센터에서 리스트 음악만으로 독주회를 가진 후 «프란츠 리스트와 그의 음악세계» 란 저서를 출판하여 미국음악 교수협회가 수여하는 최우수 학자상을 수상하기도 하였다. 2001년 미국 프린스턴 대학 사회학 연구팀이 주관하는 '21세기를 이끌어나갈 미국 문화예술인' 중 폴 김은 유일한 동양인 최초로 선정되는 영예를 안기도 하였다. 미국의 저명한 사회학자 로버트 워스나우 (Robert Wuthnow) 박사가 쓴 저서 «창조적 영성: 예술가의 길» (Creative Spirituality: The Way of the Artist) 에는 폴 김의 활동과 업적과 그의 예술적 내면 세계를 고찰하고 성공 요인을 심도 있게 탐구한 책은 베스트셀러가 되기도 하였다.
미국 센토 (Centaur Records) 레코드사가 출시한 폴 김의 총 7 CD메시앙 음반 프로젝트는 역사적인 명반으로 평가받고 있다. 메시앙 피아노 전곡 시리즈 음반으로는 세계 최초로 음악역사에 기록을 남기기도 하였다. 시리즈 음반중 «아멘의 환영» 은 당시 신동 피아니스트로 인정받아온 아들 매튜 (Matthew Kim) 와 함께 녹음하였는데 이 음반 역시 'American Record Guide' 에서 (reference최고의) 음반으로 선정되었고 세계음악계의 높이평가 받았다. 또한 'All Music Guide' 에서 2005년 베스트 음반으로 폴 김의 메시앙 피아노 음반을 선정하였다. 2008년 메시앙 탄생 100주년을 맞이하여 그의 음악 연구, 연주와 함께 미국과 유럽, 아시아 등지에서 메시앙 음악 페스티발도 계획되어있다.
2007년 클래식 음반사상 최대규모의 음반 도용사건이였던, 영국 피아니스트 조이스 핫토 스캔달에 피해자로 폴 김의 음반도 포함되었다. 폴김의 음반중 메시앙 의 대 걸작인 «아기 예수를 바라보는 20개의 시선» 앨범도 여러 유명연주자의 음반중에 포함되어 큰 화제가 되었고, 전세계의 그의 메시앙 피아노 음반이 다시한번 세계언론과 평론가들로부터 크게인정받으며 재조명 되기도 하였다.
폴김은 메시앙 음반 전곡에 이어 베토벤의 9개의 심포니 전곡 레코딩을 시작하여 첫번째 음반 베토벤의 심포니 9번 ‘합창’ 을 출시한다. 리스트가 피아노곡으로 옮긴 베토벤의 심포니편곡을 폴김은 베토벤의 오케스트라 원본을 바탕으로 자신이 직접 재편집-개정한 작품으로 레코딩하였고 음반출시에 이어 또한 악보로도 출판한다. 2대의 피아노 연주 작품으로 편곡한 심포니 9번 역시 피아니스트 매튜 김과 녹음 하였다. 메시앙 프로젝트 (총7 CD) 에 이어 이번 베토벤 교향곡 전곡 시리즈 (총5 CD) 역시 세계 최초가 된다.
음악가족으로도 잘 알려진 폴 김은 성악가이자 수필가인 아내 전춘희와 연주활동도 해왔고, 두 아들 매튜 (Matthew), 제임스 (James) 와 함께 세계최초의 부자(父子), 3부자 피아니스트로도 연주하여 세계속에 한국인의 위상을 높이고 있다.
폴 김은 줄리아드 음대와 맨하탄 음대를 거쳐 뉴욕대학교 (NYU) 에서 예술철학 및 음악학으로 이중 박사학위(Ph.D.) 를 취득하였다. 그의 학위논문은 학문적으로 높이 평가 받아 오늘날까지 메시앙 음악 연구분야에서는 필수 참고 도서로 인정받고 있다. 그는 뉴욕 필하모닉을 비롯하여 로스앤젤레스, 피츠버그, 토론토, 런던오케스트라 등과 협연을 비롯하여 독주회, 체임버 뮤직등 다양한 연주활동 을하고있다. 국제 콩쿨 심사위원으로 위촉되기도 하였고 연주 뿐만아니라 학자로도 세계 여러 대학과 학회 초청강의등 활발한 활동을 하고 있다. 폴 김은 현재 뉴욕 롱아일랜드대학 음대교수로 재직중이다.
하라다 다카시 (옹드 마르트노)
일본의 작곡가이자 연주자인 하라다 다카시는 옹드 마르트노의 대표적인 연주자로 200회가 넘는 초연을 해왔다. 어려서 바이올린과 피아노를 배운 그는 경제학을 공부하고 옹드 마르트노를 잔 로리오로부터 배우고 피아노를 기에코 도야마로부터 배웠다. 파리 국립 고등음악원을 수석으로 졸업한 후 하라다는 전세계 교향악단과 협연해왔다. 투랑갈릴라 교향곡 연주로 디아파송 황금상 등을 수상한 그는 영화음악에도 관여하여 필립 카우프만 감독, 다케미쓰 도루 음악의 <떠오르는 태양(Rising Sun)>, 브라이언 드 팔마 감독, 사카모토 류이치 음악의 <스네이크 아이즈> 등에 참여하였다. 하라다는 록, 재즈, 즉흥 앙상블 등을 위해 작곡 또는 연주를 해왔으며, 빅터, 폰텍, 데카 등의 음반사에서 음반을 녹음하였다.

JUDITH JEON
M.A.I. Foundation co-founder and board member Judith Jeon is a soprano by training and has sang professionally for most of her earlier career. She has performed in numerous operatic productions and lieder recitals throughout Europe, the United States and Asia. An engaging music educator, she frequently teaches master classes at many colleges and conservatories.
Judy Jeon's life and work reflect her venturesome spirit and creative muse. Concurrent to her work in music performance and education, she has also devoted herself to writing and literature, including essays, music journalism and criticism. For nearly fifteen years Judy has held the appointment of senior New York correspondent for the performing arts magazine Auditorium. Judy's prolific writings have also been published in numerous books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. Her latest book, Aria of Love and Happiness, is a collection of her autobiographical essays about family, education, and music in our current society. It is published by Samtoh Press.
Judy Jeon's literary career began with an unusual twist of fate in 1980 during her student days. Leaving her homeland of Korea for graduate studies in Germany, Judy was given charge of escorting a large group of very young adoptee children (ranging in ages from just four months to seven years) as they traveled towards their new life with their awaiting adoptive parents in Europe. The physical, emotional and spiritual toll from that experience was overwhelming enough, but she also contracted a serious illness through her close contact with some of those children, necessitating her hospitalization for an extensive period thereafter. These heart-rending and life-defining experiences were the basis of her celebrated non-fiction writings which earned her wide recognition and prestigious awards many years later.
Among the media appearances Judy has been featured in include interviews and documentaries on her life and experiences in her humanitarian work (CBS-TV), on music and gifted education today (KBS-TV), and on her musical family Joyous Life: A Day in the Life of Paul Kim & Sons, Trio Pianists (an animated film documentary).
Following her years of musical activity in Europe, Judy came to the United States for further studies at Juilliard, Columbia, and CUNY in the professional and doctoral degree programs. In addition to her academic degrees in music, Judy also holds a Master of Science degree in educational technology. She has increasingly devoted her work in the application of new technology to music, education, and the creative arts. In her position as managing director of the M.A.I. Foundation, Judy has committed her aggregate experiences and talents to the advancement of the Foundation, overseeing various facets of the administration.
Judy is a member of a well-known musical family. For many years she has concertized with her husband, the pianist Paul Kim, while raising their two virtuoso sons, Matthew and James. Several years ago the three men began performing together around the world. Paul Kim & Sons, a trio of father and sons pianist, is the world's first such ensemble. Since the beginning stages of the MAI Foundation's work, they have contributed greatly with their music and talents to benefit the Foundation. In her key role in the operations of the Foundation Judy manages the administrative, educational, and performing activities and also serves as liason to the public and other partner organizations.

PAUL S. KIM
Pianist Paul Kim has led a distinguished international career for over three decades as a concert artist and music scholar of rare musical vision and integrity. His unique artistry has been noted for the engaging blend of exciting virtuosity, intellectual probity, and eloquent poetry. Paul Kim is hailed as a recitalist of distinction and as soloist with many of the world's premier orchestras including those of New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, London, and Seoul. Audiences and critics alike have praised his charismatic interpretations of the music of Beethoven, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, the twentieth century American and French repertoire, and especially Olivier Messiaen.
Paul Kim is recognized internationally as one of the leading authorities on the music of Messiaen. For over twenty-five years, Dr. Kim's performances, lectures and writings on Messiaen's music have earned him widespread recognition and acclaim throughout Europe, North America, and the Far East. The composer himself had remarked that Paul Kim is "an extraordinary pianist who expresses most vividly the rhythm of life and the dynamic colors of my music." Moreover, pianist Yvonne Loriod-Messiaen, the late composer's wife and the foremost interpreter of his music, described Paul Kim's performances as being "perfect in every way?technique, rhythm, color, sonority, emotion." In describing his aesthetic and spiritual qualities, The New York Times wrote "Paul Kim's clear and transparent playing was tinged with devotion and color." Paul Kim has completed an historical recording project devoted to the complete piano works of Messiaen. This first-ever complete recording cycle encompasses even the rarely-heard works such as the composer's own transcription of Les offrandes oubli?es, the two-piano masterwork Visions de l'Amen (recorded with his young son Matthew), and the posthumously-published Pr?lude (1964) pour piano. These recordings, covered on four volumes and across seven CDs on the Centaur Records label, have been hailed as some of the most profound and influential performances, being upheld critically as the new "reference recordings." During the Messiaen centenary year 2008 Paul Kim is scheduled to perform many masterworks of Messiaen including the Turangal?la-symphonie, Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-J?sus, Visions de l'Amen, and Quatour pour le fin du temps. Paul Kim's new project is the recording of Beethoven's Nine Symphonies, transcription for piano. Parallel to these recordings is Kim's forthcoming publication of the new critical performing edition of the symphonies. The first volume in the series, the Ninth Symphony (two-piano version), was recorded with his son Matthew and the CD will be released in early 2008.
With his wife, the soprano Judith Jeon, the husband and wife duo has performed widely in lieder recitals. Since 1995, the concerts that Paul Kim has given with his young son Matthew have also received enthusiastic responses throughout the world. In recent years the father-and-son duo has further expanded to include the younger son, James, forming Paul Kim & Sons Trio Pianists. Beyond the musical ends, many of their special concerts were presented in support of various social and charitable causes. The goodwill efforts by the Kim Father-and-Sons with their music in the various parts of the world in special need have been recognized and appreciated by various relief organizations and international dignitaries including Presidents Bush and Clinton. A renaissance man of sorts, Paul Kim is also actively engaged in bringing music to the farther reaches of today's society. To that end, Paul Kim & Sons have also contributed their performances to benefit the Music Angels International Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization devoted to the development of today's young musicians in their public service in music outreach. A profile of Paul Kim's spiritual journey through his music has been featured in the seminal book Creative
Spirituality: The Way of the Artist, written by the eminent Princeton University sociologist Robert Wuthnow. Paul Kim's life in music has also been the subject of several television documentaries including Nexus of East and West: Music in Today's International Culture (PBS), Music Inside the Creative World of Pianist Paul Kim (KBS-TV), and Joyous Life: A Day in the Life of Paul Kim & Sons, Trio Pianists (an animated film documentary).
Paul Kim began his early musical training in Southern California and continued his studies at New York's Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music, receiving his B.M. and M.M. degrees. Subsequently he went on to earn a Ph.D. from New York University. He has given master classes and lecture recitals at many of the world's leading universities and conservatories including Columbia, Oxford, NYU, Rutgers, and Manhattan School of Music. His other musical activities include conducting, chamber music, arranging and composition, music technology, and competition adjudication. Dr. Kim is currently a professor of music history and piano studies at C.W. Post Campus
of Long Island University.
MATTHEW KIM
Matthew Kim, a veteran pianist despite his young age, has performed in numerous major concerts throughout the United States, Europe and Asia for many years to the unanimous marvel of his audiences. Matthew was born in New York City to pianist Paul Kim and soprano/writer Judith Jeon. Like his father, Matthew has demonstrated significant talent in piano from a very young age. Matthew's musical destiny was made clear at age two when he would persistently climb onto his dad's lap (to "help") whenever the elder Kim would be working at the keyboard. The natural progression to the structured study of music led to his prodigious achievements in the field of performance. Matthew's early musical gifts were also confirmed when he composed his earliest pieces when he was only three.
In 1996, at age nine, Matthew performed in a historically unique father-and-son duo piano concert at Carnegie Hall. This event, which had been sold-out weeks in advance, was a benefit concert on behalf of worldwide orphan children's support programs. The huge success of that event led to subsequent performances in other major cities in the United States as well as a headline tour of Asia. In recent times, Matthew has contributed his performances to the historical opening of the joint session of the United States Congress in New York City and the 9/11 memorial concert in Central Park, both in September of 2002.
Following his father's muse, Matthew has also been performing Olivier Messiaen's music since age ten. In the summer of 2002 Matthew has recorded Vision de l'Amen as part of a historic series of recordings devoted to Messiaen's complete piano works for the Centaur Records label. With this debut CD, and his related accomplishments, Matthew has achieved a triple record: 1) at age nine, the youngest pianist to perform Messiaen's music; 2) at age fifteen, the youngest artist to record Messiaen's music on a commercially-released CD; and 3) the first father-and-son piano duo to perform publicly and record Messiaen's music. The American Record Guide has recognized Matthew as "a prodigious young talent," and has upheld this album—and the complete Messiaen cycle—as "the new reference recording." His latest recording is Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (within the complete Beethoven symphony series), based on the new critical performing edition for two-pianos written by Paul Kim. The CD release is set for Early 2008.
Matthew's far-reaching and diverse musical talents also include composing, arranging, orchestrating, and flute and trumpet performance. A graduate of one of the most prestigious specialized high schools in the nation, Stuyvesant High School in New York City, Matthew has served as the music director and conductor for the stage productions SING! 2002 and 2004 as well as the Musical Theatre Guild's productions of Guys and Dolls and Bye Bye Birdie. At Stuyvesant Matthew was also the pianist and associate director of both the concert and chamber choruses. Through an invitation from The Composers Forum of New York University, Matthew performed a special concert at the Frederick Loewe Theatre.
Along with his brother James and father Paul Kim, Matthew is a member of the Paul Kim & Sons Trio Pianists. Among the highlights of their past season was a major concert tour of Asia, which was widely acclaimed. In addition to concert performances throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, they have also made numerous radio and television appearances including CNN-Arirang interview and an animated film documentary Joyous Life: A Day in the Life of Paul Kim & Sons, Trio Pianists. Among the many full-length newspaper and magazine articles Matthew has been featured in include The International Herald Tribune, New York Newsday, Daily News, and Auditorium. As an associate artist with the Music Angels International Foundation, Matthew has contributed to a series of worldwide benefit performances, supporting the mission to render humanitarian service, education, and social outreach through music.
Parallel to his musical accomplishments, Matthew's academic achievements have also been noteworthy. He has been honored as a two-time recipient of the prestigious President's Education Award, presented by Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Among the numerous prizes and awards that he has also received are from the National Geographic Society and Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth. In addition, Matthew has been selected as a 2004 National Merit Scholar. In the course of his participation in the Science Olympiad (in the New York City and State competitions), Matthew has garnered many awards including eleven top medals. In the field of journalism, Matthew was a staff writer for cultural affairs at The Spectator. In recognition of his leadership abilities and high academic achievement, Matthew was invited to participate in the highly selective National Student Leadership Conference as well as the People to People Future Leaders Summit. Since 2004 Matthew has held the position of research assistant to Profs. J. Lawrence Aber and Joshua Brown in the Department of Applied Psychology at New York University, where he has contributed to a number of key research projects in child development and education. Also, through the auspices of the Department of German Matthew has presented his research, 'The Religious and Textual Interpretation of Richard Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg,' at the Undergraduate Research Conference in April 2007. Matthew is currently pursuing studies in economics, psychology, and political science at New York University College of Arts and Science, where he is a Presidential Scholar.
JAMES KIM
JAMES KIM , the youngest member of the Kim musical family, was born in 1989, three years after his brother Matthew. Like his brother, James's musical life also began very early, at the age of three. He began studying the piano with his mother Judith Jeon (soprano and writer) and father Paul Kim (pianist and professor), but at times also with his brother. His musical versatility covers a wide range of styles and genres including classical, pop, broadway, and jazz. Thus it was a natural transition for James to further embrace another main instrument: the clarinet. However, it is the piano, above other instruments, that has been the closest to him.
In recent years, James has teamed up with his father and brother to establish Paul Kim & Sons, the world's first and unique father-and-sons trio pianists. In his academic life, James has also maintained an impressive track of achievements. Beginning in the first grade, James was recognized as an intellectually gifted child, being selected over a competing field of more than three hundred candidates as the only student accepted that year into the New York City Board of Education's prestigious Gifted Magnet Program. James has continually distinguished himself with numerous top awards and honors including the National Language Arts Competition, Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth's English and Mathematics Award, The OCA Essay Award, among others. Of particular note was James being awarded a silver medal in the New York State Science Olympiad, as his brother Matthew won gold medals in the respective events in the same year—a truly rare achievement by siblings in the history of that competition.
A graduate of one of the most prestigious specialized high schools in the nation, Stuyvesant High School in New York City, James has pursued his passion of journalism as an editor for the school's official newspaper, The Spectator, and has also held the position of Editor-in-Chief of Stuyvesant's Student Union Newsletter. In addition James served on the Presidential Council of the National Honor Society and was an active member in the Big Sibs mentoring program. James has excelled in the arena of stage musicals, having led the production of SING! 2005 and 2007 as the music director. Among his other activities included performing with the N.Y.C. All-City Music organization, whose membership comprises the best young musicians in the city. He is also an avid athlete whose competitive activities include hockey and ultimate frisbee.
Additionally, James holds personal interest in matters of social justice, environmental issues, and constitutional law. His efforts in social advocacy have led to various charitable and benefit concerts that he has performed on behalf of various 9/11 memorial events, Coalition for the Homeless, Bowery Mission, among others. Currently James is studying at Dartmouth College.
