파리의 움직이는 명품들 

언제 그랬냐는 듯, 짙은 먹구름과 암울한 회색을 걷어내고 맑고 투명해진 파리의 가을 하늘을 올려보며 오페라 가에서 집으로 향합니다. 메트로 역을 올라 엘렌 부쉬Helene Boucher 공원을 지나면 버스 정류장에 닿습니다. 

버스에 오르면 여자기사가 ‘봉쥬’ ‘안녕하세요’ 인사하며 승객들을 맞이합니다.

 물론 승객들도 인사로 화답하며 버스에 오르지요. 공무원인 기사들은 시간을 정확히 지켜 안전 점검을 한 후 출발합니다. 

운전석에 많은 장치와 사운드 기능이 있어도 스피커에서는 음악이 울려 퍼지는 일은 절대 없습니다.

 오로지 안전운행에 주의를 기울일 뿐입니다. 그 모습에서 자신이 운전대를 잡았다고 자기 마음 가는 대로 하지 않는다는 묵언의 메시지가 엿보입니다. 

어떤 정류장에서는 정차 후 다소 지체할 때도 있어 고개를 갸우뚱하게 합니다. 출입문 발판 아래 자동 계단이 내려오느라 다소 시간이 지체되기도 합니다. 

장애인이 휠체어를 오르기 위해 지면과 버스의 높이가 평형을 이루게 해주기 위한 배려임을 곧 알아차리게 됩니다.

 이곳에서 난폭운전, 과속, 거친 언행, 그리고 자기안방같이 여기는 운전기사의 맹랑한 모습은 찾아보기 힘듭니다. 

버스는 페르낭 위달Fernand Widal가를 지나 호저 살롱고Roger Salongro가 정류장, 에두와르 베양Edouard Vaillant정거장 옆 쥴르 게드Jules-Guesde공원을 지나 정 죠레스Jean Jaurès에 닿습니다. 이제 이 정거장을 연하는 가브리엘 페리Gabriel Peri길을 따라 내려가면 집에 도착하게 됩니다. 

집까지 이르는 동안 거리와 공원의 이름에 대해 곰곰이 생각해 보았습니다. 

아! 모두가 이 땅을 살다 간 실존인 이름들이었습니다. 

전부 다는 아니지만 대부분의 파리 거리 이름들은 사람 이름으로 명명되었음을 알게 됩니다. 여류 비행사, 의학자, 화학자, 정치가, 사회학자, 문필가, 사상가 등 모두 역사에 기록된 사람들이었습니다. 

그들의 삶도 우리의 삶과 크게 다르지 않았을 것입니다. 물론 평생 근면하게 살아서 자는 시간이 짧았다든가 신념이 남달랐다든가 하는 그들만의 특별한 행동이 녹아있을 것임이 분명하지만 그러나 그들 평생의 삶 속에서 우리들이 일상 저지르는 시행착오와 과오, 범법, 논쟁 등 수 없는 실수를 저질렀을 것입니다. 

만일 역사가들이 단 하나의 결점과 결함이 없는 인물만을 기록한다면 그 누구도 기록될 인물은 없을 것이기 때문입니다. 그런데 파리 사람들에게는 관용이라는 떨레랑스Tolerance가 있어 사람을 흠집 내고 내리깔고 끌어내리고 진흙탕 속에 집어넣는 행위를 하지 않습니다. 그런 과오를 덮어놓고 그의 장점, 그의 남다른 탁월함을 더 내세워주는 모습을 봅니다. 

그것이 인간의 아름다움일 것입니다. 같은 시각, 오랜만에 고국의 소식이 궁금해 인터넷을 접속해 뉴스를 보게 되었는데 마침 정부의 새 내정자들에 대한 청문회가 열리고 있었습니다. 청문회 질의자 모두가 한결같이 내정자의 잘못과 범법행위, 위장전입 등 얼룩진 과거사를 들춰내고 증거물을 제시하며 과격하게 질타하는 모습과 그에 항변과 변명으로 진땀을 빼는 대조적인 모습이 모니터를 얼룩지게 만들고 있었습니다. 누구든 깎아 내리면 앙상한 초상만 남을 것입니다. 그러기에 그런 험난한 환경 속을 헤쳐 나온 사회에서 역사에 기록될 인물은 점점 줄어들 것입니다. 그래서 거리 이름도 ‘복숭아밭(도원동)’이나 ‘물 건너 멀리 바라본다(망원동)’고 이름이 지어졌을 것입니다.
‘우리는 우리 자신에게 익숙하지 않은 것을 야만스런 것이라고 배척한다’고 몽테뉴가 일갈했던 것을 상기해 봅니다.
파리의 많은 관광객들이 명품을 휩쓸고 공항에서 검색 당한다는 씁쓸한 뉴스를 뒤로하고 파리는 ‘사람’이 진정한 명품이라는 듯, 서로 위하고 존경하는 모습을 쉬이 발견하게 되는 것입니다.
